2023 FRVTA State Convention - Carletti name badges

The 2023 Florida RV Trade Association (FRVTA) State Convention was a whirlwind experience for RV service pros, suppliers and dealers alike. Representatives and officers from all seven FRVTA regions gathered in the spirit of learning and improving our services as we came together to enhance our understanding of the industry.

This was our third state convention and Jason and I always attend with our My RV Resource members in mind. Here’s our insider’s view of the convention, complete with summaries of some standout sessions.

Getting Started: 2023 FRVTA State Convention Buzz

First, our journey began with registration on Thursday – getting our badges and convention essentials. It was like the calm before the storm, as we prepared to dive into a world of RV insights and camaraderie.

Dave and the ladies from the FRVTA state office staff met us at the Caribbean Registration Desk to check-in and offer up our Convention T-Shirts and Convention Swag Bags which were filled with goodies to make our stay at the beautiful Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa memorable.

Aloha Reception: Tropical Vibes and Connections

Next, the “Aloha” Welcoming Reception set the tone with tropical vibes, bringing together old and new friends. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere, live entertainment, and island-inspired grub. It was more than just a party; this networking experience kicked off the three day event that was ultimately about strengthening our industry ties for the sake of My RV Resource members.

Networking Hub: Luau Lounge and Breakfasts

In addition, the “Luau Lounge” Hospitality Room became our go-to spot for networking, relaxation, and idea-sharing – thanks to Wells Fargo’s sponsorship. The hearty breakfasts, courtesy of Region 3 and Newmar, fueled us for productive days ahead, all with the interests of My RV Resource members in mind.

Educational Insights: 2023 FRVTA State Convention

"Mock Trial & How to Stay Out of Court" by Harold Oehler, Oehler Mediation

This session took us into a mock trial where we had the unique opportunity to step into a simulated courtroom experience. Harold transported us into the heart of a captivating trial. Consumer, Lee King, was bringing a lawsuit against the RV dealer Mellen Campers RV and its manufacturer, Colossal. Mr. King alleged various defects in his motor home, setting the stage for what would be dubbed the “Trial of the Century.” In this role-playing exercise, we were cast as jurors, tasked with the responsibility of reaching a verdict.

The main goal was to teach RV service pros and dealers how to:

    1. Avoid Lawsuits: We learned how to handle customer complaints so they don’t turn into big legal problems.
    2. Keep Customers Happy: We figured out how to make customers happy, even when there are issues.
    3. Get Help from Manufacturers: We saw how to get the RV maker to help with legal stuff.

We learned practical tips in this “info-tainment” compliance training. These tips help RV service pros every day by making customers happier and reducing risks in the industry.

We were so impressed with Harold’s style that we invited him to present at the 2024 My RV Resource meetup. Stay tuned for more details for this interactive event in the coming months.

"RVDA Update: 2023 FRVTA State Convention"

RVDA President Phil Ingrassia provided a snapshot of the RV market and the association’s priorities. He emphasized efforts to reduce Repair Event Cycle Time (RECT) and training opportunities for service, parts, and warranty teams through the Mike Molino RV Learning Center.

Phil also touched on an RV dealer survey in partnership with RVDA that was released in August 2023, stating:

    1. Softer RV demand – retail down 24% over 2022 and wholesale is down 47% through July.
    2. Dealers are making progress on destocking aged inventory which bodes well for 2024 wholesale shipments.
    3. Industry projections anchored on $350,000 to $370,000 retail sales in 2023 compared to about 300,000 wholesale shipments.
    4. This would mean a 50,000+ unit destock in 2023 which is similar to 2019.

In this Baird survey, RV dealers were asked to rate the level of activity in their service departments compared to the same month last year. Overall, 42% of dealers reported the activity as “about the same.” 21% reported higher activity and 13% said the activity in their service departments is “much higher” than the same month last year.

In other industry news relating to RVDA at the 2023 FRVTA State Convention…

    • RVDA has indicated its support of the PART Act., known as The Preventing Auto Recycling Theft Act. The act marks converters and makes theft a crime.
    • America’s Outdoor Recreation Act, backed by both parties, brings more recreational facilities, EV charging stations, better permits on Federal lands, broadband, and partnerships to improve public campgrounds. It may also affect filming and change public lands.

"RV Industry Trends: 2023 FRVTA State Convention"

Michael Ochs, Director of Government Affairs at RVIA, delved into industry trends and economic indicators. Insights included a stronger relationship with campgrounds and GoRVing demographic data, valuable for catering to My RV Resource members.

EV Infrastructure with a Focus on RV Industry

The government’s giving $7.5 billion to improve electric vehicle charging. The RV Industry Association (RVIA) is actively involved in advocating for “pull-through charging” solutions that accommodate RVs’ varying sizes and designs. This initiative involves collaboration with government agencies, charging companies, site hosts, trade associations, and public land agencies to educate and incentivize pull-through charging. Ultimately, this investment and collaboration aim to make electric RVs more accessible and eco-friendly, supporting both the RV and EV industries in a sustainable future.

CARBs Small Off-Road Engine regulation impacts RV generators

California’s CARB updated rules for small off-road engines in December, affecting some RV generators. These rules aim to reduce emissions and might delay the ban on traditional generators until 2032. From their article CARB Regulation On Small Off-Road Engines Explained, the RV Industry Association is working on solutions to keep selling RVs with generators in California.
