My RV Resource loves sharing details about our Featured VIP members and this week, we’re proud to spotlight Theresa Reynolds at Road Tech RV LLC.

Tell us a little about your situation while running Road Tech RV LLC.

I work primarily in Connecticut, but will cover all New England states and New York, if asked by a client.

Do you live in an RV full-time?

I work from my home base in the northeast March-December. I’m then a solo traveler living in my 36′ 2015 Keystone Carbon Toy Hauler in the Tampa, FL area from January-March.

It’s a much larger and more comfortable rig than my first “RV” a small, 18′ Aliner travel trailer that I had for about 12 years. Prior to that, it was all tent camping.

I’ve been to all 50 states, many of them while traveling in my RV. There are several places I would like to go back to and spend more time in – all on a “bucket list” that I chip away at as I am able.

What inspired you to start Road Tech RV LLC?

While learning how to fix my own RV, I discovered that I actually enjoyed it. So I went to the NRVTA and NRVIA schools in Athens TX, became a certified RV inspector and certified RV service technician, and the rest is history.

My RV business is 100% mobile.

What RV services or RV products do you offer?

At Road Tech RV LLC I do a full, Premium level RV inspection, as well as Lender/Warranty/Insurance Company level inspections of Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes, travel trailers and pop-up campers.

I offer fluid analysis on all motorized RVs, and new RV owner orientations or RV walkthroughs for those getting to know their new-to-them RV.

On the service RV technician side, I offer mobile RV repair, RV maintenance and replacement of RV air conditioners, RV roof vents/vent covers, RV skylights, RV windows, RV furnaces, RV water heaters, RV refrigerators, RV stovetops/ovens and RV fireplaces, along with RV roof membrane and all types of RV sealant repair.

What is your background and how did you develop the skills to start Road Tech RV LLC?

I come from a varied background of work. I am a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was an IT Project Manager at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals off and on for 20 years, and became a certified yoga and meditation teacher along the way. I also owned and ran my own yoga studio for several years, managing several other yoga teachers there prior to becoming more active in the RV industry.

I very much enjoy being an RV entrepreneur, and eventually decided to combine my RV inspection and mobile RV repair skills with my bachelor’s degree in Business and deep love of travel to finally open my current business, Road Tech RV.

What has been your business’s proudest moment?

I couldn’t pick just one. Starting Road Tech RV LLC and doing this work has given me so many opportunities to help others along the way, and I am proud of each and every one of those moments.

What has been your biggest challenge?

While the RV school in Texas was outstanding, it was only the beginning of my learning.

The biggest challenge for me, having not come from any kind of repair background, has been gaining a broader knowledge and skill set “on the job” so I can help my clients with their needed repairs that go beyond the basics.

The value of a mentor cannot be understated!

Describe your typical work day at Road Tech RV LLC.

Road Tech RV LLC is proudly 100% veteran owned and operated by Theresa Reynolds.

There is no typical work day at Road Tech RV LLC. Every one is completely different. I have some that go by smooth as glass from start to finish, and others… well, let’s just say I’ve had to push pretty hard just to get home before dark. But any day I’ve got a happy client is a good day.

I feel truly blessed to be able to do what I do and make a difference in so many lives.

Tell us something interesting/fun about Road Tech RV LLC.

Being a female RV tech in a mostly male dominated industry has its challenges, for sure. But it can also be rather entertaining some days. I have lost count of how many times I have walked on site and the male RV owner that greets me says something to the effect of “YOU’RE the tech???” I can’t help but smile, especially when I look over his shoulder and see his wife giving me a thumbs up!

At the end of the day, all they care about is that I’ve fixed their RV and got them back on the road, or saved them from buying a lemon if it was an inspection.

If you could go back to the beginning knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?

I would have been more careful about how many jobs I accepted early on. My fatal error early on in the RV business was not being able to say no very well. I’m no spring chicken, so I quickly became over-worked, easily injured, and no fun to be around at home because I was so tired and sore most of the time. Not too mention still having to take care of all the business administration tasks in the evenings!

I had totally lost track of what it meant to have any balance in my life between work and relaxation. Over time I learned my lessons in that area, and am much better now at managing it all in a way that makes a lot more sense for myself, my family, and my clients.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start his/her own RV business?

DO IT. Don’t wait until “the time is right” because the perfect time may not ever come. Don’t worry about the start up costs. I promise you the money will come – and more than you ever thought possible. It is harder for those that are on the road a lot, but not impossible.

We need a lot more RV technicians and RV inspectors out there. If you live anywhere near me, please let me know. I would be happy to pass lots of work your way!

Any other comments or advice you'd like to share?

Just get out there and enjoy the work, and be kind to the people you meet along the way.

RVers are generally some of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of getting to know, and some will be seasonal clients of mine now for years to come.
