Dinette Won't Change Into A Bed Cover

Weekly One Reason to Get an RV inspection finds an unsafe RV dinette in the bunkhouse of a brand new RV.

Hello folks! It’s Jason again and today we’re inspecting a brand new fifth wheel with a bunkhouse. Say you had a large family, this was built for a large family. Let’s make sure your whole family is safe.

When you’re looking at an RV, are you testing to make sure that all these beds work properly? Let’s take a look at this one. It’s a dinette that folds into a bed. Now this could be on a Class C RV. Really any RV dinette that turns into a bed. Are you actually turning the dinette into a bed to make sure everything works? You should be and I’ll show you why right now.

We’re looking at this dinette and you’ll notice that the table is sitting in there crooked right now. I just attempted to make it into a bed. What is typical with a lot of these benches is that you have that little lip. That lip is on both sides and the table sits on that lip. Then you put the cushions on top and it makes a bed. What if the table isn’t wide enough the sit on that lip? That’s what we’re going to look at right here. We are going to try and do this while I’m holding the the camera. I have the other side all the way in and this side you can see it’s just touching the lip. It doesn’t sit there so this is an unsafe RV dinette. This is a bed children would sleep on.

You should be checking that on any RV with a booth dinette that folds down into a bed. This is an unsafe RV dinette and it doesn’t fit.

It’s not the only issue with beds in this RV. We can look at the bunk above the dinette and you’ll see I’ve got it in the up position. If I come over here to where these latches are in the wall, you’ll notice this portion of that latch is loose. That wall has nothing behind it. No stud just a piece of paneling holding that up there. It’s probably not going to tighten up because there’s nothing behind their to screw to. What if your kids are sitting at the dinette playing a game and that’s up and something there gives out? That comes down really fast and really hard and could hurt your kids.

There’s lots of things to look at when you’re looking at these RVs. Most people don’t think about this kinds of issues. Can you guess who does think about testing these types of things?  Certified RV Inspectors would be the correct answer. RV technicians don’t think about it. This is not typically on any PDI checklist from an RV dealer. Those big corporations that send car mechanics out to inspect RV’s probably have no idea there could be an issue there.

With your Weekly One Reason to get an RV Inspection, this is Jason and you have a nice day.
