Umbrella RV

My RV Resource likes to do things a little differently. We love sharing details about our Featured VIP members!

We’re proud to introduce Jeff Dillon with Umbrella RV.

Tell us a little about your situation while running your RV business.

My wife and I are nomad full timers and usually stay one place 3-4 months in summer and winter then explore fall/spring as we travel in our 2021 Grand Design Solitude 390RK (have swapped in a residential fridge) pulled with 2022 Silverado 3500HD DRW.

Do you live in an RV full-time?

We started out in a Reflection 300RBTS bumper pull, needed more space. We’ve been playing trailer/truck leap-frog for 6 years.

What inspired you to start your own RV business?

Issues with our trailer led me to school research which led me to becoming a Certified Technician and Certified Inspector.

What RV services or RV products do you offer?

I’m currently focused on RV inspections and new owner RV education.

What is your background and how did you develop the skills to start your business?

My whole career had been focused on supply chain management and IT support of supply chain systems. I’ve always been a very capable DIY’er in home repair/construction, auto repair and enhancements, motorcycle and bicycle repairs, etc. RV ownership then led me to doing the same – repairs and enhancements.

What has been your business’s proudest moment?

The first customer experience was very satisfying!

What has been your biggest challenge?

As a full timer, keeping tools and parts organized.

Describe your typical work day.

Reading trade articles to keep up and researching products and vendors. Conducting RV inspections and all that entails, including finishing RV inspection reports. Tending to our trailer.

Tell us something interesting/fun about your business.

I get compliments on the name. That is fun to me as I came up with it myself and I don’t consider myself creative!

If you could go back to the beginning knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?

Not much, all has come together very well so far.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start his/her own RV business?

Create a check list (business name, professional logo images, get EIN, banking, schooling, etc.) and get it done!

Any other comments or advice you'd like to share?

It is great to know you have helped someone be in a better place with RV repairs or knowledge gained through an RV inspection. I also enjoy the camaraderie and help from all my colleagues in the RV business.

Glad to chat with you, Jeff!
